The impeller is a vital component of any centrifugal pump, responsible for driving the fluid outward from the center of rotation. This ensures that all of the motor’s power is effectively utilized to properly pump the fluid. The pressure generated by the impeller is converted into velocity as the fluid’s outward movement is confined within the pump casing. Typically, the impeller is shaped like a short cylinder with an open inlet, known as an eye, which allows fluid to pass through. It also features vanes that push the fluid radially and a splined, keyed, or threaded bore to connect to the drive shaft.
At the heart of every centrifugal pump lies the impeller—a rotating structure equipped with a series of curved vanes or blades. These blades are positioned inside shroud plates and are immersed in the fluid. When connected to the motor or engine shaft, the impeller generates centrifugal force within the pump casing.
